In my experiments with the favicon I've ironically found that mozilla
firebird and opera browsers deal with it much better than internet explorer.
doesn't make any sense to me but that's my finding.

now create a bookmark to desktop.

not sure why, but sometimes mine disappear too, if I create new shortcut it comes back...I always assumed it was due to dumping temps (i could be wrong).

but your's is working on my machine.

| Well I emptied out my Temp files, rebooted and still the same. Weird

IE keeps favicons in the Temporary Internet Files. If you clear your cache,
it's gone.

Although I'm not sure, I believe it won't be displayed again (in the
address bar or Favorites) unless you re-add it to your Favorites.

if it's a site I visit a lot and I like the icon, i just save the icon to a folder and create a permanent one

You need to bookmark it again or save it to favourites ... it will appear
again then.

Ok, it's an issue with your browser cache files and a file in your machine
named ShellIconCache.
To make it show, you will need to delete all bookmark references to your
site and then create a new one.

The reason: The ShellIconCache file maintains the icon references in your
computer. When it can't find the favicon
because it's been deleted from the Temporary Internet files, it assigns the
default IE icon because the bookmark is a "link"
Once this is done the ShellIconCache file maintains this "reference" until
the bookmark is deleted and reset.

Also, by default, the ShellIconCache file only maintains the last 500 icons
used / viewed by everything in the computer.
( although there is a registry tweak to increase this number. My 2K PRO
machine is currently set at 12,000 )

hell of an answer.
have you looked at how other browsers handle the favicon?
not that they're a relevant statistic but it's nice to see your icon across
all the pages of your domain. makes you not miss the styled scrollbars i.e.
will do quite as much. ;-)

No I really haven't. Guess I need to fire up Mozilla and poke around.
;-)

Ran across a utility awhile back that would create a folder, scan your
favorites / bookmarks and check the internet for favicons for them and if
found place a copy in the folder and create the appropriate link.
However, in a "senior" moment I forgot to bookmark it.
