Missing Language option in Tools, Word04

I would like to swap between languages in Word, or for there to be an
automatic language recognition (like there was up to a week ago).

Last week the option 'Language' in the 'Tools' toolbar has disappeared -
(making the tips I've read so far on how to select languages that way pretty
useless).

I have tried to fix the problem by going through Format, Style etc in Word
itself, and by adding languages on the main op system etc but nothing works.
I just want the Tools-Language option in Word to come back! How do I do this?

Go to the View menu and uncheck the 5.1 Menus entry. It will vanish. Tools |
Language and many other things will re-appear on the menus.

For future reference,
See here for Google/Entourage gateway to newsgroups for MacWord, MacExcel,
and other MS programs for the Mac:

Word 2004 has had a rash of complaints about 5.1 Menus being enabled because
the simple keyboard shortcuts control-5 and control-8 turn them on. You can
unassign this shortcut key through the Tools>Customize dialog, if you want
to prevent this happening. The command you need is "Word5Menus" and it is
listed under the category "Window and Help".

Things that go wrong:
Tools | Language
View | Formatting Palette
Insert | Break | 6 different options

PS. MacWord doesn't have automatic language recognition/detection, I don't
think.

Control-8 short cut sounds familiar, that's when the problems started.

Unfortunately this doesn't solve my problem. 5.1 Menus is already unchecked
in the view menu, (and there is no WordMenus5 command in "Window and help").

LANGUAGE remains absent from the tools menu. :(

Any other tips?

You would have gotten a much faster response if you had posted on the
Mac-specific newsgroups, that's why I included that information. Don't know
if you are still waiting on this, but--

I don't quite believe that Word 5.1 is really unchecked in the View menu,
because if it isn't active, it should not exist at all. So your phrasing is
ambiguous. But assuming it isn't Word 5.1 menus--

If you go to Tools | Customize Toolbars/Menus, select the Menu Bar, and
click Reset, it should set all your main menus and built-in toolbars back to
the default.

If you have customized your menus or toolbars, you may want to explore the
Tools | Customize, Commands dialog, and drag the commands you are missing
back to the toolbars/menus yourself, rather than wipe out your
customizations by clicking Reset.

If you are still having problems, PLEASE post on the MacWord newsgroup
instead, as this group is just too busy for the few people who do MacWord to
catch the Mac-specific messages.
