Missing Links

Does anybody has a rule of thumb that allows us to know / predict when a
missing link will be created by MS Project? I am referring here to
predecessor & successor links as the other kind of missing links are pretty
obvious.

I only saw this happening in MS Project 2003 and not in the 2007 version. If
we could know when a missing link will be created we would be able to avoid
it or fix it in a more confident way. The Edit Links window is too small and
does not show the links properly, neither exactly what and where they were
(is the Link# the line ID #?).

Thanks,

Luiz

What do you mean by a missing link? If you mean you are trying to verify
links to make sure they're all there, you can do that more easily in the
Network Diagram than the Gantt. Of cours, you can also look for them in any
table that shows predecessors and/or successors.

Hope this helps in your world.

Hi Salgud,

When you are working in complex Integrated Master Projects (IMP) with
thousands of lines, there are times when you have to delete or move entire
hammocks or even entire sub-projects. In other cases this happens when you
copy files to other directories/folders or when you rename files.

In some instances, MS Project looses its internal links and even though the
file can be saved, when you reopen it, a popup window is displayed informing
that it could not find (some) links and asks if it should delete it, change
its source location, or continue and ignore it. When you go to the Edit menu,
the Links option becomes activated and you can select it. Upon opening you
can see that now there are some links (identified by a file and an ID?
number) whose source is "unavailable" or "inexistent". By changing the source
to a valid file (the current one in most cases) you may fix this problem
sometimes, but in other cases this does not work.

This is the case I am referring to here.

Thank you for your kind reply.

Luiz
