Missing Notes

Talal Itani

Hello,

My notes disappeared. I loaded the backups and the notes are not there
either. I loaded .ONE files that I had saved on CD-ROM, and the notes are
not there. I do not understand what happened to my notes. I even
uninstalled OneNote and installed it again, same phenomenon. The .ONE file
size is 132KB, but there is nothing in it. I saved the .ONE file to a .DOC
file, read it using MSWord, and it seems empty. I searched my drive for
other .ONE files. Please help me understand what may have happened to my
notes.

When you say, "the notes are not there", does OneNote complain when
opening them? Do they look and behave like normal sections with the
important exception of not containing any visible data?

If the files just do not open in OneNote automatically, first verify they
exist: From Explorer, press Win-F.

Use the resulting dialog box to search for any files with the *.ONE
extension. This should help to find any OneNote files present on the
hard drive.

If the files are present but not behaving normally in OneNote:
I suspect the files retained the "read only" flag when copied from the
CD-ROM. For the files found in the list above, select All, and then
Right-click | Properties.

At the bottom of the General tab of the Properties window, unselect "Read
Only".

Then try to open the files from within OneNote (using File | Open) and
see if ON can read them now.

You can also check the backups location (path secified in OneNote's
Options dialog box) to see if any previous copies of the files will work.
