Missing registry information

MikeA

I upgraded my Dell dimension 4300 from Win Me to XP Home edition ( better
later than
never).
Some programs did not work and needed to be reinstalled. After reinstalling
Microsoft Office Word 2000 SR-1 (came preinstalled with the computer)
a window opens with a message : "Required registry information is missing
and this application can
not run. Please rerun setup to correct the problem" . The same story with
Microsoft office 2000 - premium.
Rerunning setup does not correct the problem. Uninstalled and reinstalled
did not help.
I tried fixes in Q236590 and 236592 but it did not help.
With Win Me both run fine on the same computer.
I will appreciate any suggestions.
What is data1.msi? It is on the disc but not on my hard drive. Do I need it?
If yes, how to get it on the hard drive?
What is Eraser? Microsoft article 239938 states that version 3.1 is disabled
when Win XP is installed. Do I need an eraser prior to reinstalling Office?
If yes, what version for XP Home edition?
Thanks
Mike A

Hi Mike,

If you have separate entries for MS Word 2000 and MS Office 2000 then the Word 2000 entry could be the copy provided with MS Works
Suite. You generally wouldn't need to have the standalone Word 2000 installation if you are installing the MS Office 2000 Premium
edition product (which also includes Word 2000).

Upgrading from one Windows version to another rather than starting with a clean drive and installing the new Windows version doesn't
always go quite as smoothly as the 'upgrade' approach :)

Data1.msi was the key file for each MS Office 2000 series product on CD#1. So, you'd have a Data1.msi on both the Office 2000 and
Word 2000/Works Suite CDs, but they'd be different files. They don't move to your PC under those names when installing. The setup
program should, at the bottom of the dialog where it asks for a CD tell you what CD it is actually looking for.

The first fix you mentioned
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/236590/en-us?FR=1
should normally work but you'd want to follow the instructions for searching to remove the Word 2000 as well as the Office 2000
choice, then restart the PC before trying to reinstall.

The MS Office 2000 Eraser utility was created before Windows XP existed to help remove installs that didn't work through Add/Remove
programs, as a cleanup. It isn't available for use on Windows 2000 or Windows XP. What you may be able to use is the MS Installer
Cleanup utility (MSICUU.exe) from
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301/en-us?FR=1
if you're not able to uninstall the Office and Word products from Add/Remove Programs in the Windows control panel.

After using the cleanup utility (backup your files before doing any computer cleanup, surgery, installation or upgrade), restart the
PC (the entries in the 236590 article should then be gone as well) then reinstall the Office 2000 product from your CD, using a
custom installation choice to select all of the apps, including Word, to be installed from that product.
