Missing Ruler

I have a friend with Word 2003, with the latest updates running under WinXP
Home. In no circumstance can he get a horizontal or vertical ruler bar. All
the options are appropriately checked (I checked, then unchecked, the
rechecked them), and the program is in the correct Print Layout View. The
only scrollbar visible is the horizontal scrollbar.

Anyone got any ideas?

Look in the bottom left corner of the screen (with the 5 icons).

The vertical ruler is available in the first 3 modes (normal, web layout, print
layout). The horizontal ruler is only available in the print layout mode. Use
View/Ruler to display the ruler.

Rulers are not available in outline view, or reading layout.
