Missing Tools menu

I am using Word 2000, through MS Office. The Tools menu is
missing from the top menu bar. I foolowed the instructions
in an answer at the Microsoft Word MVP site " My menus and
toolbars are missing and won't come back" If I start word
by using the winword.exe /a switch from the Run window,

Word works just fine. BUT if I start it from the shortcut
on the Office Toolbar, it starts with the missing menu. I
haver also tried deleting the data key in the registry as
the above article recommended, same result. Any help
appreciated.

Could you not just edit the Shortcut in the MS Office
toolbar to include the "/a" switch in the command line
for that shortcut?

No Matt, this wouldn't really work in the long run. :)

The /a switch should only be used as a troubleshooting tool.

While it may correct minor corruption in the Registry, primarily the
switch is used to start Word using the factory defaults so it's a
quick way to see if the problem lies in the Word installation.

When started with the /a switch the following is by-passed:
- Registry: Most personal preferences are stored such as those in
AutoCorrect and Tools/Options
- Normal.dot: Custom toolbars, styles, shortcut keys, macros,
AutoText, etc.
- Global templates/add-ins: third-party templates/add-ins which
provide additional functionality in Word

Also note when Word is started this way you are unable to save
customizations.

Think I did, will try deleting it again and rebooting
before starting Word. BUT... why does it work properly
when run from the command line, but not from the shortcut?

Hi Jeff,

If you are using Word as your email editor make sure you exit Outlook
prior to rebuilding the key. Otherwise the new key will not be
recreated properly.

As for why your toolbars display when starting Word with the /a
switch: The command starts Word using the factory defaults and
by-passes the Registry. It's used as a troubleshooting tool to
determine if the problem lies in the Word installation.
