Mixing POP3 and SMTP servers in one account

Nick Turner

Hi

Could someone tell me if it's possible to enter a pop3 server for
incoming mail, and a different server (different ISP) for SMTP
outgoing mail in Outlook Express 5.0.6, all within one account?

I know this is possible in Entourage, Apple Mail.app and others, but
when i tried to set this up, i kept getting errors. When i set up two
different accounts for each, it worked; both accounts ran without
errors.

Could someone also confirm whether the setting in 'accounts' for email
address is the same as the 'reply to ' parameter?

It seemed as if changing this was interfering with the account
working. I thought the 'reply to' parameter would have no bearing, but
someone at the ISP helpdesk said that the Mac version of Outlook
Express was dodgy and that I should use Eudora!

Thanks.

It has to be possible. It's common to need two separate servers.

The POP3 server goes in the "Receiving Mail" section, and the SMTP server
goes in the "Sending Mail" section.

What errors are you encountering? Check your authentication settings. If it
works as a separate (Send only?) account, just use the exact same settings
in the combined account.

Reply-To is only necessary if you want replies to go to an email address
other than the one you're sending from. You don't need it.

Your ISP helpdesk is misinformed. The Mac version of Outlook Express is a
good program.

I've crossposted and set followups to the Outlook Express newsgroup, you
