MODI v12 can't open a .tif file that v11 can open without difficulty

When attempting to open a .tif file with MODI 12.0.4518.1014 I get the error
"the selected file is not a valid microsoft office document imaging file".
Opening this file on any machine with MODI 11.something works fine. Is
there a patch/fix/workaround for this?
