Maybe you have a trial version of Office 2003 or 2007, and the trial
period has ended. Or maybe you did not activate your Office software.

What happens if you start Word 2003 and click on Help | Activate
Product, or if you start Word 2007 and click on Office Button | Word
Options | Resources | Activate? If you are already activated, a dialog
box saying so will appear. If you are not activated, the Activation
Wizard will start. If you have an expired trial version, a dialog box
will prompt you to enter a valid product key or convert (purchase a key)
online.

Seems to me everyone has the same problem. I can't do my work now because
this stupid message. They have sites where it says oh do this and that but
none of it is working because if something's locked then none of the
applications are working on it... hahah how pathetic what a stupid program
and waste of money. Windows 2003 was way better it wasn't so complicated and
it was error free. Way to go Microsoft!

If you start Word in Safe Mode, are you able to open and edit one of these
documents then?

From Start, Run (Winkey+R) type in

winword /a

and press enter. Does this let you edit now?

No, I still can't edit.

It suggests then that you either have an expired trial version or you have
not activated Office.

I need a solution to this.
I have Office 2007 Home and Student - it is possible that I had a Trial
version on the machine initially, but I installed Office 2007 H & S and it
worked fine.

It has now 'locked down'

I have scoured the web and none of the solutions work..namely
o Unprotect the document (the whole ribbon is greyed out and non-selectable)
o Activate (The activate button (In 'Word Options') doesn't do anything - no
error, just nothing)
o Re-install (nothing changes)
o Unistall, delete all 'Office' Folders, including OPA12.* files and
reinstall (nothing changes)

Just to re-iterate - This is not an expired trial issue,or a protection
issue - this is a deep-seated bug that needs a resolution

I suspect that there are some registry settings (possibly from an old trial)
that are over-riding all my attempts. Is there any tool or advise to get rid
of MS Office Totally (including all residual Registry debris) so that I can
do a vanilla install?

Thanks

Success!!!!

I had a look at the registry and found that there is a huge mess with the
Trial version values over-writing anything you do.

Found details at article id 928218...even if you can Uninstall MS Office, do
that and then follow the instructions to delete all traces, especially from
the Registry.

I have now reinstalled and it asked me to Activate and it works!!

Lesson here is that in the UK, most vendors put on a Trial version of Ofice,
but, if like me, you buy a retails version as well, then the process goes
wrong - MS want you to upgrade and purchase - I went for buying it at a
discount with a new machine.

For the average punter this is a nightmare - I work in IT (mainframes
mostly) so I am fairly computer literate, but this has take me 14 hours over
3 days to resolve.....

Hi Thurlon,

Can you give us any further instructions on how to fix this - for a
not overly computer literate person?
We are experiencing exactly the same problem (pre-loaded office 2007
from retailer and trial version) as you described.
We've had someone come round and uninstall and then reinstall from the
original disc - but still no joy?!!?!

Any ideas where we are going wrong?

Much appreciated,
Steve

Hi Steve,

If you're saying you originally had a 60-day trial edition of Office and are now converting or installing an Office 2007 paid retail
version and it's not working the article Thurlon referred to for the cleanup steps are in

The usual cause is that you have a trial version that has expired.

I'm not sure whether that's a question or a comment, but if there is a
question implied, then the answer is that if the trial version is expired,
then you will have to either buy the program or stop using it.

Do not download it from anywhere; make sure you get physical disks (even if
you order online). The cheapest way to get any version of Office is to buy
the Home and Student Edition, which, however, does not include Outlook.

Either you have a trial version that has passed its expiry date or you have
not activated the product and it has exceeded its unactivated usage. If you
want further help, please provide some information as we are not
clairvoyants.

Version of Word or Office?
Operating system?
Are they fully patched up to date?
Is this error on just one document or on all document?
