I have office home and student 2007 (was preinstalled, and did activate it
when orinally bought machine)
For some reason I cannot use it as in word it says the modification is not
allowed because the selection is locked.
I could not uninstall the office home and student 2007 software using the
control panal in vista as i was getting an setup error message setup cannot
continue because a required file is either corrupted or not available . Run
setup again from original source disc or download locatio
so had to do it the long winded way as per instructions on microsoft's
website "How to uninstall the 2007 Office system if you cannot uninstall it
by using the Add or Remove Programs feature
I then used microsoft's back up cd for my preinstalled software and it asked
me for my activation code etc and installed as i thought it would be okay
I then went to use word and that's when i got the message at bottom of
screen saying the modification is not allowed because the selection is
locked.
Please help as the software is useless as a read only version!

Word won't let me edit any of my previously existing documents, nor any new
ones. At the bottom it reads
"Modification is not allowed because the selection is locked.

Suzanne
Most likely this is a trial version of Office 2007 that has expired.
Most likely this is a trial version of Office 2007 that has expired. Less
likely is that it's a retail version that you haven't yet activated

Hi Barbara
Generally, MS Office 2007 purchased retail editions do not expire, but 60 day free trial editions do and installing a new trial o
using a different trial product key won't extend the 60 day trial
If you had a 60 day trial edition and then purchased a retail edition, uninstall the trial edition, restart the PC then install th
retail edition and activate

It sounds like you entered your Product Key, not an activation code.
It sounds like you entered your Product Key, not an activation code.
Activation is something you either do online or by phone. If you didn't do
this, either activate it online or use the telephone method for activation,
then it's not activated.

Hi Beth
Inside an empty cd case for the OEM software it told me to
"to activate your copy of ms office home and student 2007, please use the
product key located on the certificate of authenticity below.
I have since sent off and received from microsoft the backup disc - just
incase. Have reinstalled it and still get the sae thing. Although it does ask
for activation key and type in and accept, close it all down and go back into
word or other bit of office and back to square one!
Any ideas?

Open an Exploring Window, such as My Computer, and in the Address bar
Open an Exploring Window, such as My Computer, and in the Address bar
copy/paste the following:
%AllUsersprofile%\Application Data\Microsoft\Office\Data
Then press Enter to navigate to the Data folder. Locate Opa12.dat and delete
it. (Do not delete Opa12.bak) and try activating it from the Resources in
Word again. You might find that the Activation Wizard appears as soon as you
start Word.

Can you please tell me how to active this?

Is this a retail version?
Is this a retail version? If so, I would think you would be getting prompts
to activate it. If not, go to Office Button | Word Options | Resources:
"activate Microsoft Office."
