Modify Multlevel List Style from Home Tab in Word 2007 CorruptsNumbering?

Has anyone else had this problem. It seems if I modify a multilevel
list style from the gallery on the home tab, chaos occurs (numbering
fails miserably, and it seems like the style disappers from the
gallery?), whereas if I modify the list style from the Style manager,
everything works absolutely fine and the numbering is stable as a
rock. Is there a reason for this?

Also, has anyone experienced any problems with multilevel lists/
outline numbering to files saved in rtf format? I seem to be having
problems with rtf files as of late with the numbering becoming
corrupt.

Thanks.

If you modify the list style by right-clicking its icon at "List Styles"
(under Home tab | Multilevel List), there should be no problem (and this is
equivalent to using the Manage Styles dialog box). However, if you click
Home tab | Multilevel List | Define New List Style, there might be problems,
since this creates additional list styles in the document.

Nope, the problem I am having is if I right click on the list in the
Home Tab | Multilevel Lists. About half the time after clicking ok,
the list completely disappers from the list gallery (a new one takes
its place, something like "Style 1"). I know it seems like I am
clicking the "define new list style, but I am sure that I am using a
list style and then right clicking the style in the gallery and then
selecting "modify". I can still access the list from the styles
manager, but I sometimes I have to reconnect Heading1, Heading 2, etc.

My workaround is just to use the Style Manager to modify the list. I
just didn't know if this was a known issue.

The only other variable in this is that most of the templates I work
with are in the 97-2003 dot format (compatibility mode). Would that
make a difference at all?

I don't know of any problems with list styles except for the one discussed
in the "Why is my List Style reset?" thread in this newsgroup. What are the
exact steps to reproduce the issue?

Generally, create a multilevel list or list style, attach to Headings
1, 2, 3 etc. and save as an rtf. When reopening, the list (if it is
just a standard list template) is gone. If it is a list style, it
disconnects itself from Headings 1, 2, 3, etc. and I have to go back
into the list style and relink the styles to the list.

It doesn't happen every time, but does occur with some frequency. I
have not been able to track down what triggers the corruption

Ok. I did a little digging around in the rtf code of a corrupting
template, and it seems as through Word is adding 10 entries to the
beginning of the rtf listoverride table when it opens the rtf that I
have saved. None of the other references change, so this effectively
"disconnects" my list template from the linked styles. Anyone have
any idea what could trigger this?

Thanks.

This could be a limitation of Word's RTF converter. Is there a reason you
cannot save in Word format?

Yes. It has to be rtf for compatibility reasons with other software.
I was working with another template, and on subsequent saves the list
override table would first grow by 10 for the first 3 saves, shrink by
30 entries on the fourth save, and then start increasing by 10 again.
It appears that the references to the list override table in non-built-
in styles get updated, and the references in the paragraphs get
updated, but the references in the built-in styles do not.
