Modifying any contacts phone freezes Outlook

Recently any attempt to add or modify a phone number to a
contact will freeze the Outlook application.
Ctl-Alt-Del shows that Outlook and the contact are not
responding. I must then end the process.
I can add or modify the contacts address and name data;
but, not any of the phone info.
This happend both while using Office XP Professional; and,
after I installed Office Professional Enterprise Edition
2003.
I first noticed a problem while trying to sync with my HP
iPAQ Pocket PC.
Note: the Application tab on the task manager shows
Outlook and the Contact running twice. However, when I
end one they all end. I am then returned to the desk top.

One additional note. The file search routine cannot find
the outlook.pst file. However, when I go to the
subdirectory, it is there.
