Modifying & Appending Problem

I am using the Microsoft Access 2000 (9.0.2720)
Earlier when I <<<linked>>>>(not Import) dBaseIII (.dbf) files to my .mdb
database, I coudn't modify & append records.
Anyway <<< Now,, I can modify & append records >>>> what's the reason for
this situation. Please give me the reason and how it comes.
