Modifying charts and graphs in Word 2004

S

seanbrit

I recently purchased a MacBook Pro (my first Mac) and transferred all
my Office documents from my old PC to my new Mac. I tried modifying a
graph in one of these Word documents using Datasheet. Datasheet,
however, will not let me modify the data, aside from copy/pasting and
clearing all the content. Has anyone else had this problem? Is it
because this document was created using Office for Windows? Any
insight would be much appreciated.

Hi Sean -

What do you mean by "...will not let me..."? What does it do to prevent you
from doing so? How are you trying? What version of Word - X or 2004?

Is it possible that the data that's already there was entered as a *link*?

Double-click the chart, then go to Graph's Edit menu & see if Links is in
black or is dimmed out. If it is black the data must be replaced or edited
at the source. Your data sheet & chart will update accordingly *IF* the
linked source is available to your Word doc.

Bob,

By "will not let me" I mean that I can't enter/modify data in the
datasheet in the Microsoft Graph program. I've tried to enter data in
the blank cells and change data in the cells that already have numbers
in them, but nothing happens when I type. The graphs were originally
made in a Word for PC and I can still modify the datasheet on a PC,
just not on my Mac. I'm using Word: Mac 2004.

Also, checked the Graph's Edit menu in Links is dimmed out.

Any suggestions?

Bob,

I just tried creating a new chart in Word and could not modify any of
the sample data in the Datasheet.

Please, help!

Well, one thing that I can tell you for sure is that the problem is *not*
[simply] because the file was created on the PC. I've move files containing
charts back & forth with no problem in the past. Also, I just cranked up
2003 in VPC7, created a doc with a chart, copied it over to my Mac desktop,
opened it in Word 2004 & had no problem doing anything I tried.

I even tried copying data from a *Protected* PC Excel 2003 sheet, pasting it
into a PC Word 2003 chart object, then successfully opened & edited in Mac
Word 2004... Thought maybe the Locked property might follow the pasted data,
but it didn't.

If the original was created in a much earlier version of PC Word it might be
a different story. It may also be attributable to running through Rosetta.
It doesn't sound like corruption, though, if the file works OK on the PC.

Try a Save As Web Page on the Mac. Close the file, reopen, Save As Word Doc,
close & reopen. See if that clears it up.

Hi Sean:

You can't do that in here :) Don't change the Subject, "Reply" to your
original post so the pieces stay together.

You've started a new Thread with the subject "PS" and Bob will never see it
:)

Cheers

Just caught your PS post so I am adding it in below (John has already
reprimanded you there so I won't belabor the point - let's just wite it off
to a 'panic attack" :) ):
Bob,

It now looks more like the problem is with something other than the file.

First suggestion is to run Repair Disk Permissions - you never know what
demons it might dispel and I've never seen it do any harm.

Also, was Test Drive installed on the unit - and if so did you use the
Remove Office utility to get rid of it? If it's still there or you dragged
it to the Trash your problem most likely stems from that - and there will
probably be other symptoms until the situation is corrected. If necessary,
crank up Remove Office (in the Microsoft Office 2004:Additional Tools:Remove
Office folder. I'm not certain, but you still might have to reinstall
Office, so you might want to go ahead & get that all out of the way: remove
2004 Office as well & reinstall. Take a look at this site before you
proceed:

http://word.mvps.org/mac/Diagnose.html

If you never had Test Drive you should still follow the troubleshooting
steps you'll find through the links on that page.

It's still possible that you may have come across a Rosetta conflict, but
I've not seen any other posts of a similar nature.

Sorry about the subject change. I figured out the problem (after
spending 45 minutes on hold with Microsoft phone tech support). I had
either a corrupt User Preference in Word or Graph. I trashed both of
the Preference files, restarted Word and everything works well now.
