Modifying Global Template

A

[Wd 2002] Don't know what I could have done, but for the last coupla
weeks Word keeps telling me, when I close a document, that I have
made changes that modify the global template (normal.dot), and do I
want to save them. This happens even when I make *no* changes in
*anything*. Why? I know why the prompt comes up instead of the
template being changed automatically; that's the setting I want. But
I do not know why Word thinks I have made changes to the template.
How can I diagnose this?

See “WD2002: Message to Save Normal Template When You Quit Word” at
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=291352. Ignore the first part, about
disabling the prompt. You absolutely *don't* want to do that (it's been
compared to taking the battery out of the smoke detector or removing the
bulb when you get a brake warning light), and the option is not really a
"cause." The real cause is usually a poorly written add-in, the Microsoft
Works Suite Add-in for Word being one of the most notable, but Stamps.com
and others are also common.

Could it be the latest update to Word 2002, which was sometime in
October IIRC? That's really the only change to my system--at least
as far as Word is concerned--between the time that I did not receive
the prompt and the time that I have been receiving the prompt.

I doubt it. I have Word 2002 fully patched and do not encounter this
issue.

It's best to first rule out add-ins as Suzanne suggested. To determine
if you are using any global templates go to Tools/Templates and
Add-Ins and see if there are any global templates or add-ins listed.
If so they are located in one of your Startup folders. The location of
the Word\Startup folder can be found under Tools/Options/File
Locations and the Office\Startup folder can be found in the Office
installation path..

Take a look in each folder and if you find more than one file move
them one at a time and try duplicating the error after each file is
moved out of the folder until you determine which one is causing the
problem.
