modifying text in main document to hide text in table of figures

I am using MS Word 2000, SP3

I have created a style called 'figure'. I then used this style to create a
table of figures. So, while in the main body of the text the reader will
see Figure 1. Location map of study area, in the table of figures, I want to
create a list that simply starts out with the number 1 and the word 'Figure'
is hidden. In some cases, I have a long caption for the figure that might
be two or three sentences. In the table of figures I would like to hide the
second and third sentence so that only the first sentence shows up.
