modular UML design

Q: Is it possible to have a modular design spread across multiple VSD files?

What we're hoping Visio can do for us is to 'import' and synchronise class
definitions from one VSD file into another, be it automatic or manually.

Having a modular approach distributed across multiple files is particularly
useful when considering larger development teams where each developer is
responsible for a module and the design thereof, because there would be too
much contention to put all the design into one huge file. It also poses
problems when considering audit trails if monolithic designs (files) are kept
under revision control.

I would envisage that 'imported' class definitions are automatically updated
upon loading the model and that such class info would be scoped in a package
with a name that resembles the model (=file) that these definitions
originated from.

The basic underlying question is; does this functionality exist in Visio? Or
can it be imitated somehow?

Any help greatly appreciated,

Iwar
