I am unable to get this exspression to work. It appears
to me that the abs function will only operate for one
value, I need it to apply to a range of values.

I take it you are trying to do something such as
=SUM(ABS(A1:A5))/5
This is an array-formula, so has to be entered using CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER rather
than just ENTER.
Excel will automatically enclose the formula (as displayed in the formula
bar) in parentheses { ) to show that it is array-entered. (You cannot just
type in these yourself.)
This applies to (almost) any function (not just ABS) that passes an array of
values (rather than a single value) to another function.
