Monotype Sorts - Embedded in Word Template

I have a Word template that was created in Word 97 with the Monotype Sorts
font embedded in the document. We recently swapped machines out for Windows
XP with Office 2003. The document template still opens up and shows the
characters from the Monotype Sorts font correctly. The problem is when you
create a new document from this template the font does not transfer. The new
document ends out substituting the Monotype Sorts font with Symbol which
completely changes the document. Shouldn't the embedded font transfer? How
can I know what font won't disapear with the next version of Office? What
can I do to fix the 1000+ documents that are already posted using these
fonts?
Any help would be appreciated.

A change in the behavior of embedded Installable fonts was made, evidently
between Word 2002 and 2003. Fonts are usable in the documents in which they
are embedded, but they are not automatically installed on the system any
more, nor does there seem to be any way to extract them for installation. If
you want this font to be available to all documents, you will need to
purchase and install it. You may want to see the thread on this subject that
is currently ongoing in microsoft.public.word.printingfonts.

Okay, I looked up the other thread you directed me to and I've conceded. I
would like however to know what you believe is the best approach to fix all
these documents created using the Monotype Sorts font. I created a macro in
the template to autoexec on every document based on the template. The macro
replaces every instance of the old Monotype Sorts symbols with an Arial
alternative. I figured Arial will be around for a while. I created the
macro by recording a simple search and replace. My problem is that it won't
dig into text boxes or tables. The bullets, based on a Monotype Sorts
character that we're usnig in our tables can not be found using Word's find.
I can't even find text within these tables.
