More about Images Pub 2003

I posted this as a reply in Publisher 2003 Images, but did not receive a
response and really need the help, so I hope it is okay to ask again.

Rob, thank you for your advice.

I did resize all the images through MS Office Picture Manager – I do not
have any other photo programs in my computer – using the “Compress for Web
pages†setting. Most were reduced in size, but some I cannot reduce any
smaller than 40KB. I tried to compress further by saving the image to a
separate folder I labeled “Web site images.†Then I bring the image back into
Picture Manager and click “OK†to compress further and nothing happens.

Many of the images that were compressed are larger when saved to the image
folder, and some are even larger when the file folder is created through
“Publish to the Web.†For example, one image was 3.1MB. In Picture Manager
under “Compress for Web†it notes the image will be reduced to 2.5KB (yes,
that small!), however, when saved to my image folder, the size is actually
53.1KB. When the file folder is created through “Publish to the Web,†the
image is 3.1MB again.

Any idea on why this is happening and what I can do to keep the image
compressed in the file folder? In another post, DavidF mentioned that Pub2003
creates several images for different browsers, but I’ve noticed that just
some images appear several times and in different sizes in the file folder
created.

When I crop an image before saving to the image folder (and before inserting
to Web page) the original image will appear, at a much larger size, in the
file folder created. I did try reducing the images to the size for e-mail,
but the quality is very bad – the images are blurry and lack detail.

I have even gone into the file folder created through “Publish to the Webâ€
and reduced the image size of the large images, but that did not work. When
viewed in Preview, a red X appeared where the image should be.

Does anyone have suggestions for what can be done so the images on the page
are a size for faster downloading? The pages I am having the most difficulty
with have six to seven images. (No more than I had using Publisher 2000.) I
have a few other pages with more images, but they download okay in Preview.

Thanks for any suggestions.

You're welcome.
Don't use MS OPM. Download (free) IrFanview and use that to resize and
optimize your images for the web.
Don't optimize an image that was already optimized...work from your saved
original or you will end up with mud.

Your other post did not make it, that is why you didn't get an answer.

Resizing images through the picture manager does not resample and compress
the images. If you didn't do it before, download and install the SP1 for
Office 2003 as I suggested so you can use the compress graphics feature.
Reference: Compress graphics file sizes to create smaller Publisher Web
pages:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/publisher/HA011266301033.aspx
When you run the compress graphics feature be sure to opt to do all images
in the publication.

53.1 KB may be relatively small if you started with a 3.1 meg file. What are
the outside dimensions of the image after you insert it, and resize it for
your Pub doc? If you are dealing with a large image, then it may be this is
the optimized size.

Did you go to tools > Options > web tab and uncheck "rely on VML..." and
"allow png..."?

You cannot crop an image in Publisher 2003 and then hope to resize it. When
you "crop" an image in Publisher 2003 it doesn't actually crop the image, it
just hides the part of the image that you thought you cropped. That is why
you get a full sized un-cropped image when you publish to the web.

Download and install Irfanview and use it to crop your images before you
inset it into your Pub page.
