More link problems

I have a Word doc with about 60 tables linked from an Excel workbook.
For no reason I can determine, the Word doc now has "Error! Not a
Valid Link" instead of showing about the last third of those tables.
Yet if I do Open Link it opens the correct Excel file and shows the
correct location on the worksheet selected.

Is there some way I can get those links to be valid again? Without
pasting every single one of them that is.

Struggling with tables in an Excel workbook linked into a Word
document.
Word 2000 (9.0.3821 SR-1)

I link them by Paste Special, then choose Link and HTML format.
And right now I have 48 such tables. When I paste them in they all
look fine. But if I update the fields then only the first 21 tables
show
up properly. The tables after that appear as follows.

Error! Not a valid link.

Which confuses me as if I click on this and then do Open Link, it
opens the correct Excel file, and shows the correct area highlighted.

Is this a limitation of Word? Is there a work around?

A limit of 21 or so such linked tables is going to be extremely
annoying.
