more trouble with fractions

W

wisekaren

Someone e-mailed me a Word document (presumably created in Windows) of
a recipe with what we used to call "case fractions" -- that is,
fractions like 1/2 that are reduced in size to occupy just one
character space. Trouble is, when I open the document on my Mac in Word
X, I just see a little hyphen where the fraction should be. Same thing
happens when I'm copying and pasting a recipe from the Web. Can I make
Word X recognize and create these fractions automatically? In Word for
Windows, if you type 1/4, 1/2, or 3/4, it closes up automatically for
you. Many thanks!

You need to upgrade to Word 2004 to get Unicode support, which will
recognize the fractions as entered in Word PC fonts and display them the
same way. Word 2004 will also do that same "closing up automatically" of
1/4, 1/2 and 3/4 as you type, and also allows you to create similar "case
fractions" for all other fractions using the Mac OS X Character Palette.

Aha! Thanks! Do you know whether $109 (price seen at Mactopia) is the
"going rate"?

Yeah, the price on Mactopia is the "Official" price. You'll do a "little"
better than that by shopping around. Make sure you get the CD AND the
licence key :)

However, I would strongly suggest that you buy the whole Office 2004 suite.
You can get the Upgrade Edition for $239, and that's the one to have. Many
of the power features are not there or don't work right unless you buy the
whole set. For example: Mail Merge doesn't work properly if you don't have
Entourage. The Drawing package doesn't work properly unless you use it from
PowerPoint. Serious calculations need Excel :)

Cheers
