more weirdness between paragraphs

Marianne

Hello again,

Thanks to this board, I successfully shifted four full-length novels into
the format I needed. Here I am again, with yet another oddity. Hopefully
someone here can help!

Of the five documents, the first one (Book One) had this odd habit of
distributing text throughout a blank page. Sort of stretching it, like
Gumby, with these huge chunks of white space between each new paragraph and
the one preceding. At the time (quite new to the world of a PC) I simply hit
several blank spaces until a new page popped open. Then I could go back and
keep typing where I’d left off. Those blank pages tacked on the end kept the
text neatly packed while writing.

So here I am with this long-completed document that looks pretty much fine,
but there are still these odd bits of space here and there. At the end of
the book, I found I needed to once again hit “enter†until I had cleared that
page of text and popped open a new blank page. Then the text neatly shimmied
up the page and got snug within itself.

So here’s what I notice. If I open up any of the other four books (none of
which, by the way, I had the same vexing white space to contend with) and
highlight a block of text, it’s just text. Paragraph after paragraph,
indentations and justified and expected. If I open that first book, and
highlight a block of text, within the black field I can see a white thread of
space between each paragraph. As if each one is within its own small
document, unwilling to actually touch the paragraphs (or lines of dialogue)
before or aft.

Does this sound familiar? This appearance of space between paragraphs? Is
this some odd format which can be altered with a simple adjustment? I look
forward to a solution.

thanks much,
~Marianne

Sounds like you have your text Justified; try Left instead of Justify.

Highlight a portion of the troubled text and Format | Paragraph - Left
instead of Justify
if that fixes the problem apply the same change to the entire document.

Could be that a space before and/or after has been set with the paragraphs.
Select a paragraph and go to Format | Paragraph. Look at the space before and
space after. It should be set to 0 if you don't want extra space inserted
automatically. Also note that to go to a new page, don't press return/enter,
insert a page break. This will start where the cursor is. (Insert | Break |
Page). Hope this helps solve your problem.

It sounds like the page is justified vertically. Take a look in
File/Page Setup and on the Layout tab check your Vertical alignment.

Although the additional white space you see sounds like space before
or after the paragraph. So as Rae suggested, check your paragraph
formatting as well.

I'm wondering if it's a combination of vertical alignment on the page
and spacing before/after each paragraph.

I do, yes. I have the paragraphs blocked so their angles are sharp and lines
straight. But it's the same with the other four books, and this odd, thin
frame around the paragraphs doesn't exist in those other books. But thanks
for your suggestion! I'll go and transfer the original document into a fresh
one, remove the justified format, and see if the space between disappears.

I'd thought of that, too. And twice, at least, I tried setting the space
before and after the paragraphs to zero point. Curious, isn't it?

Here's more oddity! Spurred by your and Rob's suggestions, Rae, I slid the
entire thing into a fresh blank document, intent on trying both the
reformatted paragraph (left, then again justified) as well as checking the
point space between paragraphs. Lo and, when I highlighted the text, that
mysterious white thread visible between paragraphs was gone! I dunno.
There's some logic at work here that eludes me.

Thanks for your suggestions.
