When I click in the text, type some text, then grab the mouse again, th
mouse does not work for a few seconds. This is very annoying as I nee
to make a lot of small changes to text.

I have Office XP on Windows XP.

I have tried to install the service packs, but I have misplaced m
original CD... (I just moved house)

Hi Writingwizard,

This sounds like there could be a problem in your machine's configuration.
Perhaps a bad driver or a driver conflict...

If you boot Windows in Safe Mode (hold F8, I think it is, when starting up
the computer and you should get the menus where you can choose the mode)
does the problem persist? If it's gone, then there is some kind of machine
configuration problem.

Try removing then reinstalling the drivers for the graphics card and the
mouse.
