Mouse function does not work in Word

I am unable to select anything in Word using my mouse, and everytime I do,
Word freezes up, stops working and either closes down or restarts. I tried
to Repair using the software disc and also uninstalled/reinstalled. I also
downloaded all updates. I am unable to scroll, select text, do anything.
Only the keyboard works. The mouse works fine in other Office programs.

So MS has a KB article on this bug proving they are aware of the
susceptibility of the data key to corruption. But there's no real
explanation as to why it happens nor how they are going to stop it
happening. Our assumption is that it is caused by Office Updates installing
whilst Word is left running. This is mainly because we seem to get a deluge
of posts following the monthly updates.
