Mouse No Longer Highlights Words

Jeff Mort

Interesting problem, it only happens in Microsoft Word.

Using Microsoft Word 2003 with SP3

With a document opened (any document), I am no longer able to click on a
word to highlight it, or use the mouse to click inbetween words to insert a
word or two.

Simply put, the mouse is no longer working the way it is suppose to.

Sounds like you corrupted the DataKey. Run Regedit, navigate to the key and
press DELETE.

Thank you for your response. I read through the various posts that were
closely related, one Microsoft KB said the same thing, it did not work.

Opening in Safe Mode works, we're hedging our bets on a corrupted add-in.
There are only 2 to choose from!

Thanks again.

Hi Terry,

I am trying to fix a similar problem on my computer, which is causing
considerable frustration!
I'm not familiar with the Registry Editor, but have followed your steps
below. do i delete the whole "data" folder or just something from within it?

Your response would be very much appresciated.

Kind Regards

Renee

Vista and Office 2007. Inside of Word the mouse did not work. Now it does
after delete the data entry in the reg.

Thanks

Hi Terry,

I am also having a problem with my mouse no longer functioning in Word 2007
(with Vista) but I'm not an IT expert. I was able to get to Run Regedit but
I don't know how to locate the corrupted data key. I'm guessing it's located
in the "Word" directory but I've looked at all the files and can't figure it
out. Could you please lend some assistance?

Thanks much,

After opening Regedit, navigate down to Word by expanding the links listed
until you have expanded WORD. Then right-click on DATA and select Delete.

1. Close Word.

2. On the Start menu, choose Run and type "regedit," (without the quotation
marks). This will open the Windows Registry, which (if you're not familiar
with it) has folders that are navigated just the same as folders in Windows
Explorer (My Computer).

3. In the HKEY_CURRENT_USER folder, find the Word Data key at:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Data

4. The "key" will be a folder named "Data." Delete it. Word will build a new
key upon startup.

I have done this several times, and have no trouble finding the data key.
But it still doesnt work. I am using Windows XP, are there any other fixes
out there?

Thanks
