Mouse over or hints for more information

As a lecturer I would like to show the meaning of words as extra information
when a document is accessed. As the reader clicks on or 'mouse over' a word
a hint box comes up to explain the meaning of that word. The extra
information should not be visible unless the word is selected. Is this
possible?
