Mouse stops working with Outlook 2007 - I am sick of it.

J

JJ

There are many reasons why I hate Microsoft products. Here is a true
story.

I have installed Microsoft Outlook 2007, and having lots of problems -
such as - this bloody thing is ridiculously and annoyingly slow.
However, I was able to improve the performance a bit by removing/
disabling all add-ons and reducing personal folder size.

Now the strangest of all problems: some times after starting Outlook,
the mouse stops working while composing an E-Mail. Keyboard still
works, but the email "body" becomes no longer "selectable" using mouse
- even the right click context menu doesn't work. However, other
fields such as To, Cc, Bcc, Menu bar are fine with the mouse.

Noticed that restarting the outlook temporarily resolves the problem.
One more thing - not only in edit mode, but also while reading emails,
the body text is not selectable with mouse.

Anyone got any idea? Thanks in advanced.

Thank both of you, Ben and Diane.

Ben,
I am using Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP 2. My mouse is an
HID-compliant mouse (manufacturer - DELL) with Driver Version 5.1.2600.0
(Provider: Microsoft).

Diane,
No, I don't have antivirus integrated with outlook. The mouse is not wireless.

Along with Ben's question about the mouse brand and drivers, do you have
antivirus integrated with outlook?

Is it a wireless mouse and keyboard set?

Hi everyone. Has anyone found a fix for this? I am experiencing the
same problem with two of my users computers and I have a feeling that
others will report it given time. I have a range of set ups but the
general config is Windows Vista SP1, all updates installed, running
Office 2007 Professional SP2. Same symptoms as JJ, the mouse
functions spordically do not work within any area of the body of an
email, whether reply, forward or new message, to select, highlight or
place the cursor at a particular point. Restarting Outlook
temporarily fixes the problem. It's very frustrating. A recent
update maybe?

Does the problem still happen if you start Outlook is safe mode?

Tim --

My cursor stopped working in Outlook 2003 a few weeks ago, after
several upgrades. It only stopped on my Lenovo/IBM X60 tablet
notebook, but not on my main machine that shares the same PST file.
The only mouse I'm using on the X60 is the integral TrackPoint.

Very frustrating.

What are the symptoms? (threads more than a few weeks old are no longer
available to many of us, making it very important to include the old thread
so we have a clue as to what is happening and what was tried.)

Most likely nothing to do with Outlook. But, who knows. More information is
needed.

Ok. Is this a laptop or desktop computer? If a laptop, have you tried the
track pad? If a desktop, have you tried another mouse?

Does this happen in any other programs? If it only happens in Outlook, does
it only happen when composing an email? Or, does it happen in other parts of
Outlook?

Do you have custom Control Panel/Mouse settings like trails, larger pointer
etc?

Please let me know. Thanks.

J

JJ

It is a desktop computer, and after reading your post I tried with a
different mouse, and able to reproduce the behavior.

It has been observed only with outlook - even other office applications seem
to be working as usual. And, this is not only while composing an email - it
happens while trying to select from a message while reading (in read-only).

And finally, I do not use any custom control panel etc.

Thanks for your reply.

One more observation:

Whenever this thing happens, some options are disabled. Like, if I go to
Tools > options > Mail Format > Editor Options, the "Proofing" and "Advanced"
options are disabled, and only "Popular" is enabled.

I started experiencing this issue after I turned on the reading pane.

Turning the reading pane off (View, Reading Pane, off) seems t
resolve

I first experienced this issue with Outlook 2007 with SP2 this morning
and quickly found this topic. I'm using Windows XP Professional x64
Edition with Service Pack 2 installed. Microsoft Update shows no
updates for my Office software except for the Office Live add-in 1.4.

Turning the reading off does not affect the behavior in my case.
Also, unlike JJ the "Proofing" and "Advanced" options, or any others
that I can tell, are not disabled. The behavior is limited to Outlook
and is the same as described by JJ; I can't use the mouse to navigate
in a message reply or to select text in the Reading Pane or the
message window of a reply.

PS-I noticed this message thread in a couple of other forums listed
below. Is there a more correct place to reply or will the message get
propagated to the other forums?

I had the same issue with O97 in XP, deleted the email template in C:
\Documents and Settings\..user...\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates
which seems to have solved the problem.

FYI. I did solve my problem...at least so far...in Windows 7 by allowing the
Outlook application to run as administrator on the compatibility mode tab
within the properties of the application. I was able so switch back and
forth from that administrator mode and produce and fix the problem. Will
need more time for user testing over time, but seems to be working well for
now.
