Mouse Trouble Please help

Please help if you can!
I am going nuts with the following problem
windows xp, office 2000, excel, intellipoint mouse
I click on a cell.Then no matter what I do, the mouse
keeps selecting cells as if it were stuck. The cursor
stays as a cross.The keyboard seems disabled.
If I go to the file menu, it remains a cross, and I have
to control alt delete to end the program.
Please help if you can, I am unable to use the program!!
