Mouse Wheel Click problems with O2003Pro

I am using a Win 7 machine and a Microsoft optical mouse. My wheel-click has been set as a double-click and every program on my machine accepts this and reacts positively to it (open file, for example, when double-clicked in explorer).

EXCEPT for MS Office 2003 Professional which accepts the double-click as a single left click. ALSO when a file is selected for opening, the title of the file is not reflected in the "open file" box at the bottom.

Any ideas appreciated in advance. I don't know what I have not tried from run as admin to run as windows xp; don't know what else to do.
