Mouse wheel scrolling horizontally in Office 2003

I just upgraded to Office 2003 (on Windows XP). Twice today, the
scrolling wheel on my MS Optical mouse has started scrolling documents
horizontally instead of vertically. It happened once in Excel, and
once in Word. Closing and re-opening the application fixed it. Any
ideas on what's happening?

Where was the mouse pointer when this happened? I find that that happens
here when the mouse pointer is situated in the horizontal scrollbar... and
it's by design.

The mouse was up in the doc. I tried it with the mouse in the
horizontal scrollbar and saw the behavior you described. Yes, that
seems by design, but that's different than the problem I saw. It's
very intermittent -- happened only once today.
