Move/Assign Tasks in Project 98 through Automation

Duncan M Gunn

Hi,

Is there a way to move a task in Project 98 through automation? At the
moment, the only way I can see how is to take a note of the task, delete the
task, add a new one at the desired position and then assign all the
properties from the previous task to the new one. However, as there are
over 400 properties for a task + resource (and 200 custom ones!) if this is
the only way I would greatly appreciate it if anyone knows how to quickly
assign task properties!

PS If this is better suited to win32.programmer.ole then please let me know.

Hi Duncan,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

I'm not sure about automation, but if you click on the row number first so
that the whole row (task) is highlighted, you can then click and drag it to
where you want it to go - or Cut /Paste.

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at
this web address: http://www.mvps.org/project/

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on:)

Duncan,
I guess my first question is why do you need (want) to move tasks using
automation? The location of tasks in a plan certainly does make the plan
easier to follow but execution of the plan is not really affected by
where tasks appear in a plan. However to answer your question, you
shouldn't have to re-assign all the task properties. If a spare number
field is used to set up a new sequence for the tasks, then the tasks can
be sorted on that sequence and the whole file can be permenently
renumbered. Setting up the new sequence in the spare field may require a
clever algorithm depending on the reasons for moving tasks, but I'm sure
it can be done.

Hi Duncan,

Further to Mike's advice, if you want to do it through ay-utomation you have
to simulate the manual process (selectrow, editcopy, sselectrow (where you
will insert), editpaste.

Permanently renumber only works when keep outline structure is on also, so
it doesn't answer teh question I am afraid.
See my other post for the solution.

Unfortunately this would require use of the clipboard which could lose user
data, so I can't use this approach.

Thanks anyway,
Duncan
