Move Macros from one computer to another

C

Carol Mitchell

We are in the process of transferring from one machine to
another. Some staff members created personal macros to
make their work go more smoothly, but are not saved into
templates or other styles that will transfer easily. When
one fellow opened his files on his new computer,
the "Disable macros" message appeared - although he
selected "no", he lost all of his preset macros within his
documents.

How can we save the macros before transferring from one
machine to another?

Thanks!

Macros are usually stored in a separate "template" file that is
automatically loaded when Word is opened. Sometimes users put their macros
into the global template (normal.dot) file. You could do a search on the
old computer and find that file, copy it to disk, then find the one on the
new computer and write over it.

However, before doing do, it is a good idea to open Word on the old
computer, press ALT-F11 to enter the Visual Basic Editor, and check out the
macros that are stored in your "normal.dot" file to make sure there aren't
any real viruses. If you are unsure, consult your Administrator and have
him/her check it out.

You can also open Word, click "Tools", "Templates and add-ins", click the
"Organizer" button and check to see what macro project items are stored in
your normal.dot file.

The users haven't lost the macros they stored in documents (though this
isn't necessarily the best place to save them). If they reset their security
to Medium, they'll get a message allowing them to enable the macros. As Bill
says, however, they probably stored most of their macros in Normal.dot,
since that's the default save location.
