Moving a text box to another page

DoM

I know this has been discussed in the past but I can't now find it. I'm
trying to move text boxes (by dragging) from one page to another within a
large text document in Word 2003, but find that almost invariably a blank
space (of roughly similar size in text area) is left behind either in the
'source' area that the text box formerly occupied or at the end of the
'source' page. It is then impossible (by all my efforts and 'skills') to move
existing text or to insert new text into the blank spaces created. It is as
if part of the old text box formatting does not clear itself when the text
box is moved. The problem does not seem to be overcome or in any way
determined by changing the text box alignment settings under 'Format Text
Box' (e.g. unchecking 'align with text' and/or the 'anchor' option, etc.).
Your help will be very much appreciated. (PS I'm an 'aging geriatric' fairly
new to computers, so I'll ask you to please be gentle on me! with technology
terms and computer jargon. I have a rather limited grasp. Ordinary English is
about my limitation.)

Well, generally speaking dragging any object from one "page" to another in
any version of Word is something to be avoided like the plague :) One
reason is that Word files have no physical awareness of "pages" in the first
place - they're a linear flow of text from beginning to end. Objects are
always attached to that text in some way so the gap may simply occur due to
the document not repaginating due to a number of variables. Do the gaps
eventually close up of their own accord?

If it's necessary to move an object from one location (page) to another I'd
suggest that you use cut/paste rather than dragging. Try that & see if
things don't work out better.

BTW - You've been [mis]guided into the group for Word on the Mac. In this
case no big deal because many of the regulars here work both sides of the
abyss, but for future reference it would be better to post to one of the PC
Word groups which you'll find listed here:

Well, you're way ahead, DoM! A lot of Gen Y visitors here haven't even got
ordinary English, given that they are victims of modern "education"... ;-)
