Moving Autotext entries between templates and documents

Lenny

I have a custom template (.dot) which runs a macro, inserting a large table
with fill-fields. Works perfectly when run from within the .dot.

Placed the master .dot into the Word Startup folder. When running the code
to insert the autotext in a document (.doc) created off the master, I get an
error window indicating that the autotext and add-in will be lost in the
resulting .doc. If I select YES, the resulting document has the icons to run
the code, does everything it should up to inserting the autotext, then a vb
error message.

How can I make autotext entries stored in master templates available to
documents that are created off them?

I thought that by placing the master in the startup folder, that it would
make ALL customizations available to any documents created off them.

What the message is telling you is that AutoText can't be stored in
documents. But once the AutoText entry has been inserted in the document,
the fact that the AutoText library itself is not saved with the document
shouldn't be an issue. And as long as the document has access to the
template, the AutoText entry will be available for reinsertion.

Suzanne: sorry but this is gonna be long...
Can you help me sort a few things out regarding custom templates and the
documents created therefrom?

The master templates I create are kept in a folder on my harddrive (Not my
Template folder). Once created, a copy is moved to a network folder.
Employees access these templates thru their FILE-NEW-On my computer window
where they have access to the master .dot's.

The default save, once open, is as a document. This is where the user has
problems. As long as they are in the same Word session, the customizations
are accessible and work (buttons, toolbars, key combinations, etc). Once
they 'save' the file to their harddrive or a network drive and reopen the
document, none of the customizations are available. If I look at their VB
editor, the file is referencing their 'Normal'... not the custom template.

Through research scouring various (news groups) I have gleened what is and
is not stored in templates and documents... I got that... I read that by
placing a copy of the custom template into the Word Startup folder, it would
make the customizations available but that does not always seem to work. I
experimented with placing a copy of the custom template into the Microsoft
Template folder and creating a document thru FILE-NEW. This seemed to be
more consistent, however, when I did the same procedure on an employees
computer, the resulting file only displayed (1) of the buttons and the macro
would not run. It was pointing to their 'normal' in the vb editor, not the
custom template that I placed in their template folder. (is a re-boot
required to 'activate' and make available the new template in the folder??_

What do I need to do to be able to give the employees consistent
accessibility to the customizations placed in the templates?!!!

Since I have no experience with networks, I'm not going to be the one who
can help you with this. I assume you're confident that the AutoText entries
are actually saved in the template you're putting on the network? And that
users have access to this template whenever they're working on the documents
based on it? I can't see why they would be showing Normal as the attached
template if the specific document template were available.

Suzanne: does a copy of the custom template have to be placed into the
individual employees template folder? what about the Word Startup folder?
and... after placing in either location, do you need to do a restart? I'm
trying to find a common ground here.... thanks - Lenny
