Moving box causes addition of many pages

In some of my word documents, attempting to drag a text box
(even if empty) either causes Word to crash or the sudden
addition of hundreds of blank pages. It turns out I am not
alone in this problem as a colleague in another state
reports the same problem as he tries to prepare a document
to send to me.
Does Microsoft have a patch for this problem?
Word 2002 running on Windows 2000.

Hi Peter,

Take a look under Help/About Microsoft Word. If it doesn't not reflect
SP-2 then you do not have all of the patches installed.

You can use the Office Product Updates site and use the Scan utility
to find any needed updates:
http://office.microsoft.com/ProductUpdates/default.aspx

Or you can download the patches manually. Here is some info on how to
obtain all of the updates:
