moving contacts between identities?

D

Dr Q

I am running Entourage 2004 on MacOS 10.4.11.

I would like to switch from using POP to IMAP on my GMail. When I make
this change in my existing identity, Entourage changes the labels on
my messages on the GMail server. For example everything in my GMail
Inbox is placed in my local folder inbox and the label is changed from
Inbox to All mail on the server. For me this defeats the purpose of
going to an IMAP based approach. One suspicion I have is that this may
be related to having mail from my contacts.

Ironically if I create a new identity, this behavior does not occur.
So this is what I wanted to do and test my theory of whether the
address book is affecting how messages are handled.

My question is how do I transer my contacts, notes and calendar items
into the new identity from the old identity AND keep category
assignments.

I have tried the following strategies

1) Export to RGE format only contacts, notes, task. When I import,
nothing is imported. I get an an empty folder under my local folders.

2) I dragged the contacts to my desktop and then drag them back in the
new identity. This method brings in the contacts since it creates
vcards for each address book entry. Unfortunately this does not retain
my category information.

I would appreciate any help on either transferring my information
between identities or in solving my basic problem of Entourage's
handling of the IMAP messages in my existing identity.

Thanks.

I'd suggest keeping your existing identity. Using your old Gmail POP
settings, clean up and clear out anything you don't want before
connecting via IMAP.

Then follow my instructions here
<http://blog.entourage.mvps.org/2007/11/connect_entourage_2004_to_gmails_imap_service.html>.

Your POP folders will not appear in your IMAP account setup. You'll need
to recreate those.

If anything gives you trouble then please post back with specifics.

Hope this helps!
