Moving from Access97 to Access2000

I decided to install Office 2000. Previously I used Office97. After the new
installation of Office 2000 I was unable to open my 97Access database
containing 25 years of data using the correct password. I was forced to
remove Office 2000 & reinstall Office 97 in order to access the database.

Is this kind of password problem with Access 2000 a common thing?

It sounds more like a conversion problem.
If you still have Access2000 on your machine, open Access 2000 then open
your Access 97 database using Access 2000.
You should have a wizard pop up offering to convert the database to Access
2000.
I have a database that started with Access 2.1 Everytime I upgrade my
Access version I do this and everything works fine.
Make sure you keep a copy of the 97 database in 97 format just in case.
