Moving objects

I am trying to move object on the page (lkines, graphics etc) but I am unable
to move them around finely but it jumps to random places on the page.

Is there a way to change the defalt settings or has this happened to someone
else?

Have you tried pressing Alt while you drag? This overrides the grid if it is
active.
