Moving Objects

Ted

In a word document, I have imported a picture, and I simply
can't move it. I have read and tried all of the directions
given, from both the book and help menu, but I can't move
the picture. HELP!

Thanks

Hi Ted,

Graphics are imported by default as "in line with text", which means that
they're treated just like ... well ... a piece of text. That means you
can't move them freely.

To change that, click in the picture to select it, go to the Format menu and
select Picture (which should be at the very bottom), click on the Layout tab
and select any option except "in line with text". That will put the picture
on a different layer of the document (the "drawing layer") and you will be
able to move it freely. And, depending on the option you choose, the text
will wrap around the picture or the picture will be in front of or behind
the text.

Word XP allows that default to be changed, but I couldn't find a way to
change it in v. X. Is it there? What about 2004?

Hi Matt,

Do you mean the default method of pasting a picture as "in line with text"?
I doubt it, but I'm not in 2004 so I can't check it. Anyone else?

Yep, that's what I mean. I have to use Windows at work, and when I found
that the XP version allowed the default to be changed from "inline with
text" to "top and bottom" I was quite the happy guy. Can't find this
ability in v. X though.
