Moving Office 2K to new machine

My Win98 desktop just died and I got an XP laptop. The
laptop came with Works, just as the desktop did. I
installed an Office 2K upgrade with no problems on the
old machine but now the install program says that it
can't find a qualifying product on the new machine (but
it's there). I know that MS stopped letting us just
upgrade OEM Works in 2002 but my Office is from 1999, so
it shouldn't be an issue here. Can anyone suggest a
solution? I apologize if this answer is already in the
list but I can't imagine reading 731 pages to find it.

Am I correct in guessing that the XP laptop came with the current version of
Works? In my experience, the upgrade programs recognize the various
versions when they test for qualifying products. Since Works(XP) is newer,
the upgrade package won't recognize it.

If your desktop had Works, and you have the CD, you may be able to use that
as the qualifying product. However, I'm concerned that the new Works and
Office2000 may not work and play well together. It would be safest to
un-install Works(XP) before proceeding.

Good Luck.
