Moving Office from old computer to new

My XP Laptop computer died (Windows just stopped working--would not boot up.
I had XP Office programs + Publisher on it. I bought a new laptop (VISTA)
with a trial version of Office 2007. Do I have to buy the programs again? I
think I've bought them several times already over the years--I started with
Excel 1.0 for the MAC in the early 80s.

As long as you still have the disc and the key you're ok.

I would uninstall the 2007 Trial Version (and Activation Assistant) if you
don't want them, then install Office XP with your installation media and
legally-obtained product key (as Michael mentions). If the activation
doesn't work, then you may need to try the telephone method of activation
because your hardware has changed since the original installation.

Office XP is not fully compatible with Vista, or Win7, that being said most
problems centre on Outlook.
If you have a retail version of OfficeXP simply install it, having first
uninstalled the Trial & Activation Assistant via add/remove, rebooted, then
run MSUpdate
