Moving SQL database -

We have the SQL database on a different server than ProjectServer2003. We
soon will be moving the SQL database from server 'B' to server 'C'. Can we
just point ProjectServer2003 and WSS to the re-located database without
re-installing? If so, is there Documentation on it? Is it difficult/easy?

well I suppose you can backup - restore your SQL bases.

Backup/restore is our plan...however, the QUESTION is...is it doable to
change ProjectSever2003 and WSS to POINT to 'new' SQL server rather than
'old' SQL server without re-installing ProjectServer2003 and WSS?

Yes it is possible. I have done this a couple of times.

Make sure that the new SQL server installation is identical. Also, you will
need to have the same accounts that PJ server uses to access WSS and SQL db
setup on the new box. I did not use a backup/restore but chose to import the
data into the new database using the SQL server Data Transformation Services
wizard. This helped get the windows accounts over also. In another case, I
just created the windows accounts manually.

Once the new instance of sql server is up and running, you will need to use
the Conninfo.exe utility in the Project server 2003 bin folder to switch over
Project Server. You will also need to use the administration URL for
Sharepoint services to change the default content server and configuration to
the new instance.

I am not sure that there is any specific documentation to cover the case but
you can use sections of existing info from the MS Project Server 2003
INstallation guide. You can find links to that and other helpful resources
here:
http://www.mvps.org/project/links.htm

Hope this is helpful.

Hi David,

I followed up to this article and failed too. I have a new server, have
installed SQL, WSS and Project (all work fine) but when i migrate database, i
don't if i have to create new database or overwrite database justed created
when i did the installation (i did both and got the same problem). I can't
execute 2.c action.
This option never appears to me. Why?
If anyone could help me (us)?

My MS Project 2003 SQL database needs to move from one server to another. We
do not use Windows SharePoint Services (WSS). Have you received pointers on
how to successfully accomplish this? _lynn

Hi LML,

Follow the steps in following KB Article:
How to back up, schedule, and restore a Microsoft Project Server
database
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/323330/

If you restore your SQL Server database on another different server with
a different server name, then use the EditSite tool to point your
project server database to the new SQL Server

Here's the link for tool and instructions:
Project Server 2003: EditSite Tool

OR

Here's the instructions to use the tool:

Good Luck!
And let us know how it turns out.
