Moving Stuff With Links

Bill

Hi,

I occasionally need to move sections or folders that contain links to
documents. The document have not been 'embedded' into OneNote but exist in
their own right within the appropriate folder under My NoteBook folder and
when I move the section the links fail.

Is there a way of doing this from within OneNote that moves the linked
documents too?

Unfortunately, no. The documents do not move when you rearrange notes and
pages within OneNote.

As a workaround, do you have a central location outside of OneNote's My
Notebook folder, where you store files? Put your files there and insert
links to OneNote from there. Then, the links to those files stay the same
and you can move items around within OneNote.

A Variation on this workaround includes keeping all files in a central
folder within the My Notebook folder.

In all cases, ensure that you are using full paths in the links and not
relative paths.

Erik,

Thanks.

How exactly do I ensure this?

If you drag a file from Explorer, OneNote will insert the full absolute
path in the FILE:// URL.

e.g.

FILE://C:\Files\SubDirectory\document.xls

In other words, you shouldn't ahve to do anything else if you're dragging
in from Explorer.
