Moving text from row to column in Excel

B

Hi,

I'm working with a report from a web-based application that I cannot
export into Excel. I can copy and paste the text, but when I do that
all the text that is listed in columns horizontally ends up being
listed in the first column of my Excel file vertically. What I want to
do is select, say for example, the first 8 or so items in the list
vertically and have them move to the first 8 horizontal cells. Is
there an easy way to do this short of copy and paste? This is
something I may need to do on a regular basis and need a quick and
easy way to change the way this info is coming into Excel. The text is
not tab or comma delimited so using the Text to Column command will
not work.

Thanks for any help
Beth

Hi Beth,

I'm not entirely sure which of these two solutions might work for you.

Solution #1
Click on the letter A of the column header and that should select the entire
column. Then use Data > Text to Columns.

Solution #2
Select the pasted range and use Edit Copy, then switch to a different
location or other sheet and use Edit > Paste Special > Transpose.

Yes, XL v.X will transpose - there's a checkbox at the bottom of the
Paste Special dialog.

Note that this applies to copied cells. If the clipboard contains
material copied from another application, a different Paste Special
dialog comes up that allows you to Paste as Text (or another format,
depending on the clipboard's contents).

In that case, paste into the worksheet, then copy the cells and Paste
Special again.
