Moving the mouse cursor with the right arrow from left to right

When I type a sentence incorrectly for instance
How are mou? in stead of How are you?
and I want to correct the sentence by placing the mouse cursor at the
beginning of the sentence and then moving the cursor with the right arrow
towards the "m", the whole sentence changes to the following:
-H-o-w--a-r-e--y-o-u-?-
This happens in excel as well ...
Please advise ...

I've seen this problem mentioned before in the last several days... probably
by you. I just wanted to let you know that I'm not ignoring it. It's just
that I've never ever seen anything like this occur--and I've seen just about
everything that can go wrong in Word.

I can't fathom anything in Word that could cause what you're seeing. It
sounds positively bizarre.

So... for starters.. what version of Word are you using? What version of
Windows?

Are the dashes actually there? Or are they just a screen artifact of some
kind that goes away when you press PageUp/PageDown?

If the dashes really are there (are you positive that they're dashes, and
not some other character), is this happening with all documents, or just
with one document?

If all... what happens if you start Word in safe mode? Hold the Ctrl key
when starting Word, and click Yes to starting in safe mode.

Thank you for your reply Herb, I really appreciate it. Yesterday, the
keyboard started doing other funny things i.e. numbers don't want to type
etc. and I decided to replace my keyboard. The result? Everything is fine
again, it was the first time this happened to me.

A bad keyboard would have been my first guess... except that the problem
would have been ubiquitous, not confined just to Word and Excel. In any
event, I'm glad it's resolved. Had it not been a hardware issue, it promised
to be a real head-scratcher.
