Moving Thunderbird to Entourage

I have just sent a comment to Mac. I understand that they will not reply to it. That is fine, as long as they know, but maybe someone out there can help me (and maybe others who want to move from Thunderbird to Entourage)

Is there a clear and easy set of instructions to do this operation? I have been given a link (www.entourage.mvps.org/accounts/thunderbird.html) which turn out to be unclear (for me, anyway). I went through the steps, but somewhere along the line, I am fouling up, no matter how much I have tried. It also seems like so much work that it is not worth the problem. Is it?

Thanks very much.

I haven't tried this, but I read the instructions, and they seem clear. When
you say you are fouling up, how do you know? What error messages or
unexpected results do you get and where in the process do you get them.

A comment to 'Mac'? Who is 'Mac'? How did you send a comment?

You need to be much more specific about how far in the steps you've
gotten, where it goes wrong, and what exactly is happening.

Thanks for your quick reply. Here is a description of the steps I have taken in my recent attempts to migrate from TB to E:

1. following the instructions in the link, I went to Emile/Library/Thunderbird/Profiles/"meaningless number".default/Mail/Local Folders and copied all folders and files there and pasted them in a new folder on my desktop.

2. Among those, all folders carried the extension .sbd while the files were either extension-less or had the extension .msf. I assume that ALL files and folders regardless of what extension they have (or not) should be changed to .mbx. Is that correct? and if that is the case, should each be done manually or is there some sort of quicker way? You can well imagine the work involved in converting dozens and dozens of files and folders (which is why I asked whether the effort is really worth it. I mean, will be getting something so much better than TB as to justify the time?)

3. In any case, I added .mbx to each of the folders just to see what happens.

4. I downloaded the script data from the link in that same site. It opened fine with the right data. Then I clicked on run.

5. Nothing happened...at least nothing that I could see, so I assumed something happened (is that the way it is?)

6. I followed the instructions to import but when I located the file in which I had the copies of the TB data, the "import" button was greyed-out. I tried several times and by various means with no better results.

7. Just for the hell of it, I also added .mbx to several files to see whether that would work. Nothing.

Conclusion: either I need to change all the files so that they carry the .mbx extension, or I am doing something wrong aside from that.

Thanks again.

Emile,
As I read the instructions, you need copy and rename only the extensionless
files, not the folders nor the files in them.
Running the script does not produce any output, but each of the selected
files (e.g., INBOX.mbx) will have its file set to TEXT, so that Entourage
will open it.

Hello Ed,

I did what you asked me but am still not able to get results from the Script thing. I wonder whether what I am NOT doing is changing some of the terms in the Script Editor window, because I noticed that some words are in green and others in blue and some can be changed and so on (please see below a cut and paste of that screen). I guess too is I don't know or cannot figure out how to apply the Script Editor to the files so as to get the files to change from mbx to TEXT.

Download the script. When you copy/paste you have to compile the script to
be used and line ending can get messed up.

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/downloads/scripts/thunderbird.zip>

Run the script from the script editor. After it works it magic on your
files, you will then need to import the MBOX files into Entourage.

See these movies for dealing with MBOX and .rge files.

The terminology is way beyond my brain's ability to deal with it and much
less, my knowledge of terminology such as Scripts and so on. I have no idea,
for example, what is meant by "compiling script" and where do I copy paste
from and to, and so on.

You don't have to do any of that if you just download the script from the
link. I generally try to give users the option to see the script online and
copy it if they wish or download for those that don't want to bother.

Basically you just need to rename the email files made by Thunderbird, gives new extension .mbox then just move it to Mac, drag & drop to Entourage, or click file-import in Entourage. that's it.

You can see & follow the step by step instruction from this below website:
<http://www.riches.com.au/articles/export-outlook-entourage.htm>

The author gives very clear step by step instruction how to move emails from outlook to entourage through thunderbird. I think it is suitable for you case

Thanks for this suggestion. Unfortunately, it does not work (I tried it). It seems like it belongs to an earlier Entourage and so on. I did exactly waht the author of the article suggested but, (a) the renamed files or folders could not be dragged and dropped in any part of the Entourage window, and, (b) if I tried it thru the File>Import way, everythng in the final window all mbox items are greyed out while all .sbd items are black, but the IMPORT button remains greyed out.

It seems as if the ne Entourage insists on renaming all mbox items as TEXT, before the switch can be done and that has to be done through the Script Editor and that is where I am totally stymied because I have no idea what the terminology means and so on.

of the Entourage window, and,

You need to drag to the Inbox folder, not just anywhere in the folder
window.
(b) if I tried it thru the File>Import way,
everythng in the final window all mbox items are greyed out while all .sbd
items are black, but the IMPORT button remains greyed out.

If they are grayed out, something went wrong with your process to convert.
