Moving Word X to laptop

I just bought an iBook and want to move Word X for Mac to it.
Unfortunately, even though I still have the CD and the proper code,
it's an upgrade CD and is looking for my earlier version. I still have
my Word 98 disk, but not the code for it, so I can't install it in
order to replace it with Word X.

How do I solve this? I'd be happy to mail the CD's to Microsoft to get
one that will just install without all the nonesense.

Rumor has it (i.e., many people have reported) that you can point the
upgrade installer at the Word 98 CD, instead of installing it.

I think this may work better with the drag and drop installation, which
perhaps allows you to remove the CD?

Not sure whether it would accept a previous installation that you pointed
out on a mounted disk/over a local network.
