Moving WordArt / Envelopes / Line Spacing

I recently upgraded to Version 7, and there are a couple of functions that I
can’t find.

A) When I used to Insert WordArt text, I was able to able to left-click my
mouse on the text and move it all over the screen. With Version 7 the WordArt
text is placed in the next space available, and I cannot move (or drag) it
around. I can insert WordArt from previously created documents, and it moves
around just fine. Why?

B) When I’m working with WordArt, the ribbon changes back to the Home
ribbon. Why? Can I stop it from switching on its own?

C) When I create an envelope, Version 7 selects the font and type size. I
would like the envelope to use the same font and size as the original
document. How can I change this?

D) My Word documents are automatically adding a line between paragraphs, and
I have to switch this off each time. How can I alter the default position of
this feature?

Thanks,

A) WordArt is inserted as In Line With Text. If you change the wrapping
style to, say, Square, you can drag it anywhere on the page; otherwise, it
behaves as part of the text.

B) When you click on the WordArt object, you should get the contextual
WordArt Tools | Format tab. When you click outside the WordArt object, you
are in normal text, so you get the Home tab.

C) Word uses the Envelope Return and Envelope Address styles for envelopes.
You can customize these styles to use the same font as the document.
Ideally, save these changes to the template the document is based on.

D) The default Normal style in Word 2007 has 1.15 line spacing with 10 pts
Spacing After. You can change this, or you can swithc to the Word 2003 style
set.

Answers following your questions...

I recently upgraded to Version 7, and there are a couple of functions that I
can’t find.

For future reference, it's Word 2007, and its "version number" is
version 12. "Version 7" was released more than 15 years ago.
Why?

This is controlled by a setting in the options. In Word 2007, go to
Office button > Word Options > Advanced, scroll down to the "Cut, copy
and paste" section, and change the "Insert/paste pictures as" dropdown
to something other than "In line with text". Try "Square". This will
also control what happens when you copy a picture from somewhere and
paste it into Word.
B) When I’m working with WordArt, the ribbon changes back to the Home
ribbon. Why? Can I stop it from switching on its own?

Right after you insert a WordArt object, you should see the WordArt
Tools > Format ribbon, not the Home ribbon. Each time you click on an
existing WordArt object, the WordArt Tools > Format ribbon should
appear again (it's a "context-sensitive" ribbon). If you click into
ordinary text, then the Home ribbon may be selected.

There is no way to lock a particular ribbon tab to prevent context
switching. I wish there was.
C) When I create an envelope, Version 7 selects the font and type size. I
would like the envelope to use the same font and size as the original
document. How can I change this?

The address on an envelope automatically uses the Envelope Address
style. To change the appearance of the address, modify that style --
display the Styles pane (Ctrl+Alt+Shift+S), right-click the Envelope
Address style name (if the cursor is in an address, the style name
should be in selected in the pane), and choose Modify. Select the font
characteristics you want, click the "New documents based on this
template" button, and click OK.
D) My Word documents are automatically adding a line between paragraphs, and
I have to switch this off each time. How can I alter the default position of
this feature?

In the Styles pane, click the Manage Styles button (the third of the
similar ones at the bottom). Click the Set Defaults tab of the dialog.
Change the Space After setting to 0 and click OK.
